Collection: Sony PSP
The PlayStation Portable[a] (PSP) is a handheld game console developed and marketed by Sony Computer Entertainment. It was first released in Japan on December 11, 2004, in North America on March 24, 2005, and in PAL regions on September 1, 2005, and is the first handheld installment in the PlayStation line of consoles. As a seventh generation console, the PSP competed with the Nintendo DS.
The PSP uses a form of optical disk cartridge called the UMD. The PSP is the only licenced device to be able to use this form of media. Each disk can hold a maximum of either 900mbs for a single layer disk, or 1.8gbs for a dual layer disk. Movies stored on the UMD were stored at a resolution of 720x480 and then downscaled to fit the PSP screen, this made for a sharper image.
